How to identify the most suitable lakes for fish farms? New report on GIS analysis

Work Package 4 on spatial planning in Aquabest aims to develop a spatial planning manual, which is used in two Swedish cases in order to evaluate the usefulness of the manual.

One identified important action in the spatial planning manual is the performance of a GIS-analysis in order to identify suitable localities for aquaculture farms.

This report presents a GIS-model developed for localizing open-cage farms in freshwater lakes. As a first step, the model identifies and ranks the lakes which are most suitable for aquaculture. In addition the model includes a biological diversity parameter, for which three classes are identified; 1) fish farms probably OK with respect to biological diversity, 2) fish farms probably not OK until national guidelines are developed for risk assessment with respect to fish farms in relation to natural populations, and 3) fish farms not suitable in these lake due to the presence of natural populations worthy of protection. After the lakes are identified and ranked, the model divides the lakes in 500*500 meter squares in order to do analysis for suitable localities within each lake.

The aim of the report is to identify the most suitable lakes for fish farms and identify possible administrative and physical obstacles for establishing fish farms at certain localities in specific lakes. Authors  wish is that the report will serve as a basis for further discussions and investigations for authorities, municipalities and companies interested in starting fish farms in the Jämtland county. Finally we hope to demonstrate how principles of spatial planning can be utilized in promoting sustainable new economic activity in the Baltic Sea region.
